The International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS is the most authoritative international, professional, non-governmental organization (N.G.O.), technical director of UNESCO for the protection of Cultural Heritage which aims to promote the theory, methodology, technology and information for the protection and enhancement of historic monuments and sites of countries around the world. The ICOMOS was founded in 1965 by decision of the Second International Congress of Architects and Special Protection, held in Venice in 1964. The ICOMOS has as members scientists from around the world and operates in 104 countries and 5 continents. The international administration is elected every three years. ICOMOS headquarters are in Paris.

The ICOMOS acts as technical advisor of UNESCO. In this capacity examines the proposals of member countries of UNESCO for the registration of national monuments in the list of World Heritage (Natural and Cultural). With 28 Specific International Scientific Committees, also study specialized topics as traditional architecture (CIAV), the protection of historic cities and settlements (CIVVIH), cultural tourism, cultural routes and others.
