PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF ICOMOS
THE 11th WORLD GENERAL MEETING AND THE
SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM OF ICOMOS IN SOPHIA
BULGARIA, 4-9 OCTOBER 1996
The 11th World General Meeting of the International Council
of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Scientific Symposium
‘Heritage and Social Changes’ took place in Sophia on the 5-9 October
1996. Approximately 400 protection specialists from 86 countries participated.
The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS presented a poster exhibition from its
activities and a book exhibition with published material from the Ministry
of Culture and private publishers. Moreover, it distributed an information
brochure which included the main activities and its immediate programmes.
The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS contributed to the international scientific
speculation with recommendations from its members and submitted suggestions
to the General Meeting. Therefore, a suggestion of the Hellenic Section
about the protection of cultural heritage, of every kind and origin, of
the former Yugoslavia was adopted as well as the constitution of a special
committee in order to study the problems of protecting this heritage.
This committee is charged with advancing to protection actions for the
monuments in cooperation with special scientists of the area and creating
a data basis in cooperation with the European Council and UNESCO.
