The 18th of April of every year has been declared by
UNESCO and the International Council of Monuments and Sites- ICOMOS- as
the World Day of Monuments.
This anniversary seeks to make the public aware of the important issue
of the protection of Cultural Heritage. For this purpose all kinds of
events are organized all over the world with the initiative of UNESCO
and ICOMOS. The aim is not only to make known to the wider public the
importance of the monuments of every country and their problems but also
to promote the issue of their protection and incorporation to modern,
social, cultural and financial life.
The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS given the opportunity of the above-mentioned
anniversary organizes events every year.
In the context of the above events, the Hellenic ICOMOS has suggested
actions for:
- the establishment of this day as a day of free entrance to the monuments.
- the publication of a catalogue of the wealth of the cultural heritage
in danger every year on this day.
- making the young aware of the issue of protecting and maintaining
the monuments.
