The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS was established in 1972,
originally as a Scientific Committee of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Since 1992, it has operated as an independent and recognized scientific
union. Today, it has approximately 750 members and is administered by
an 18-member Board of Directors elected every 3 years.
It has recently acquired permanent headquarters in Athens, at 73 Pireos
Str.
Regional departments operate in Thessalonica, Archanes in Crete, and in
Agrinio.
The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS makes a distinct presence in the field
contributing to the preservation and protection of cultural wealth in
Greece as well as abroad.
In the international field it is mainly activated in Southeastern Europe
and the Mediterranean basin promoting its bilateral co-operations.
It has given special emphasis on the preservation of monuments endangered
by wars or natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, compiling data bases
for them.
